Tyler’s Computer

First off, let me apologize in advance about the coherence of this post. I stayed home from school today after several days of feeling poorly. All of my students were out sick last week and that nasty bug finally caught me! Minus a few brief wake-ups, I was out cold from eleven o’clock last night until five o’clock this evening. Talk about a deep sleep!

One of the things I was most concerned about before moving to The Bush was how Tyler and I were going to occupy our time. Obviously, there are no bookstores, no malls, no cafes, no restaurants, and no bars in Newhalen. We both have to find other ways to make fun!

A couple of months ago, Tyler decided to start researching how to build a computer. His ultimate goal is to use it for filmmaking. In September, he ordered all of the parts he’d need. This week, he finally received the last part (that took forever┬áto arrive in the mail, as to be expected in rural Alaska). He built the entire computer in one evening and had it running perfectly! He’s had no prior experience with computers, by the way. He’s an English major. My abstract mind can’t even begin to understand how he did this. I can only regard the project with the utmost awe and respect. My husband is amazing!

Overall, Tyler saved $1,600 by building the computer on his own. For a genius mind like his, it was a piece of cake. Needless to say, he is very happy with his new computer and can’t wait for the fun he’s going to have with it!
